6 Steps to Moving into a Senior Living Community

Apr 12, 2023

Start touring.

Research senior living communities in your area and set up tours to get a sense for different communities. Consider touring during a mealtime to get a taste of the food or touring during an activity to meet residents. Some communities have a resident ambassador program and will even set you up with a resident to get to know you and answer your questions about moving to senior living.

Find the community you love.

There are many things that you may consider in your decision-making process, for example: the location, pricing, amenities, dining options, living options, and the overall feel of the community. Before making this decision, you may tour the community more than once or visit during activities and events to help you get a sense for the community. During this process, our Housing Counselors are here to be a resource to you, regardless of which community that you choose. We recognize that there is a lot involved in making this move, and we are here to help.

Reserve an apartment.

Once you find the community you love, you’ll decide on an apartment, sign a reservation agreement, and pay your reservation fee. This will hold the apartment until the rent start date. When your lease goes into effect, the reservation fee will be converted to the damage deposit for the apartment.

Pick a move-in date.

Some residents may choose to start their rent prior to making a move, so that they can hold onto the unit that they love while taking the time to make the transition to their new apartment. Others may start rent and move-in the same day. It’s up to you! Either way, you’ll coordinate with the senior living community and let them know the day that you would like to start rent and when you’d like to start moving!

Sign your lease.

When you reserve your apartment, you’ll get a copy of the rental agreement so that you can review it ahead of time and come prepared with any questions that you might have. Then, you’ll make an appointment with the senior living community to sign your lease.

Get your keys and start the move.

The day that your rent starts, you’ll be able to pick up your keys and start your move. This is an exciting day, and we can’t wait to welcome you to our community!
