Seek the Good – Be the Good
Nov 3, 2024
As the cold winds of November settle in, we often take the time to contemplate on the past year and of course remember to give thanks. Sounds like the beginning of a hallmark moment. But let’s be real for a moment – it’s so much easier to grumble and complain. As the winds of November begin to blow, I begin to feel irritable about the cold. So instead of contemplating on what I could be thankful for, I find myself in a grouchy mood. Not exactly a good way to start off a Thanksgiving message.
Something about our human nature often gives way to such crabby thoughts. Starting your day in an irate, snippy way will keep you short-tempered and cross. People just might notice how snarky you are. But remember this: It’s not good for your health to live like this. There is a better way.
When we read the words of Jesus, we are reminded that he says:” Seek and you will find.” If you have the mindset to look for the good you will find it. Our human nature tends to seek out what we believe is wrong or not going well. But we need not give into such thinking. Seek the good! Look for the best in other people! In every situation seek out something to be thankful for.
An honoring teacher will know just how to bring out the best in their students by looking for the good in them. Is there a teacher in your past who was a great encourager for you? Who else has been a hopeful, positive influence on you? On those difficult days when nothing seems to be going right, you can turn things around by being the reassuring optimistic person you need to hear from. Ghandi once said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” All around us are opportunities to find treasures of happiness in others through our heartening words. By brightening someone else’s day, you will experience joyous delight in return.
Keep seeking for the good!
The Apostle Paul encouraged the early church with these promising words:
“Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” …from 1 Thessalonians 5
