“The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.”

The Hope of Spring

Mar 25, 2025

Spring is here and we enjoy a bountiful time of new life.  The cold days of winter are behind us.  Look everywhere throughout nature and marvel at its beauty and life.  We can easily understand why poets and authors use springtime as a metaphor for hope and happiness.

We need hope and happiness in our lives, and no one says it better than Harriet Ann Jacobs.  She was born into slavery and endured its cruel hardships.  When someone like this offers beautiful words of hope, I take notice.  She has said:

“The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.”

Let springtime become not only a metaphor of hope for your life but also make it a reality by looking for the beauty of this season all around you.  I believe that God is faithful in revealing beauty, love, hope and happiness to all people.  You may find it in the wonder of nature all around you.  You may see it in the eyes of a caring friend.  You may find it through your faith as you understand that God is love and wants to restore your life as surely as the restoration of springtime.

Lucy Maude Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, knew the goodness of God even during the difficult days of WWI.  Springtime for her was truly a metaphor for hope for the world gripped by the horrors of war.  She wrote:

“That is one good thing about this world…there are always sure to be more springs.”

We’ve waited for the warmth and revival of spring all winter.  So too we can wait for God’s promise to renew and restore us.
