Can I install a washer and dryer in my apartment?

Oct 26, 2022

Here is the first article in our Housing series. Today we answer the question about whether you can install a washer and dryer in your apartment at an Avinity-owned community.

Can I install a washer and dryer in my apartment?

The simple answer is no. However, I am writing to argue the case for why you may not want an in-unit washer and dryer. There are pros and cons obviously.  Let’s starts with the pros. Keep in mind that I live in a 2-bedroom apartment, with in-unit washer and dryer.

Pros:

1. First of all, there is a convenience factor.

Truthfully, it is very nice that when I want to wash my clothes, I don’t have to leave my apartment.

2. It’s a little more private.

No one else sees what your washing, etc.

3. Lastly, you’re not paying for maintenance costs.

If your washer or dryer all of a sudden is nonfunctional, you are not responsible for it. It would be up to Housing Director/Maintenance team to fix the issue.

Now that we have discussed some of the positives, I want to share with you the negatives of having an in-unit washer and dryer.

Cons:

1.    The space it takes up.

Regardless of whether you have a separated area, like I do, for a stacked unit, it takes up a lot of room.

2. If you have in-unit washer and dryers, so do your neighbors. (NOISE)

Your neighbors above, below, and next to you probably have a different sleeping schedule than you do. And you will hear their machines.

3. Maybe one of the biggest downsides is the NOISE in your own apartment.

If you want to watch TV in your living room, you will be turning the volume way up.

One of the most frustrating things is if you have the washer/dryer on, and the AC unit on (which in the summertime is a must), you can’t hear a word from your spouse in your own bedroom. Let alone whatever riveting show is on the TV.

4. Lastly, if you pay for your own electricity, your monthly costs will increase significantly.

In closing, it is my opinion that for apartment living you do not want your laundry inside the apartment. Its far more annoying that it is convenient. Plus, all of our communities have convenient laundry rooms spread throughout each campus.
